Flashes – better light for analog and digital photography
What is a clip-on flash unit?
What is a clip-on flash unit?
A hot-shoe flash is an external flash unit that connects to the camera via the hot shoe or a sync cable. It provides additional light during shooting to better illuminate subjects.
What do I need an external flash for?
What do I need an external flash for?
For situations with low light or high contrast. External flashes are more powerful , easier to position, and often rotatable and tiltable – ideal for portraits, interiors, and indirect flash.
Are old flashes compatible with modern cameras?
Are old flashes compatible with modern cameras?
Partly yes – but be careful: The trigger voltage of older flashes can damage modern digital cameras. For use with digital cameras, flashes with a low trigger voltage or adapters should be used.
How do I connect a flash unit?
How do I connect a flash unit?
- Digital cameras : usually via the hot shoe
- Analog cameras : hot shoe or sync socket
- Some cameras require a sync cable , e.g., many plate cameras .
What is the flash sync speed?
What is the flash sync speed?
This is the shortest exposure time at which the flash is fully triggered. Typical values are 1/60 s to 1/250 s. Longer times are possible, shorter ones usually require special equipment.
What is a manual flash?
What is a manual flash?
A manual flash requires specific settings: power (e.g., 1/1 to 1/64), distance, ISO, and aperture must be coordinated. In return, complete control over the light is possible.
How do I measure the correct exposure when using a flash?
How do I measure the correct exposure when using a flash?
An external light meter with flash metering capability is helpful. Alternatively: use experience or a digital test shot (with digital cameras).
Can I also use indirect flash?
Can I also use indirect flash?
Yes – many flashes can be rotated upwards or to the side. This allows the light to be reflected off the ceiling or wall, resulting in softer shadows and a more natural light.
Are there differences between flash units?
Are there differences between flash units?
Yes – e.g. in:
- Guide number (luminous intensity)
- manual vs. automatic control
- Connection type (shoe or cable)
How do we classify the optical state?
How do we classify the optical state?
Our used flash units are manually inspected before sale and classified into the following condition categories:
- Good: Technically fully functional with light to normal signs of wear (e.g., scratches or paint wear). Corrosion in the battery compartment is possible, provided it does not impair functionality.
- Acceptable: Fully functional, but with clearly visible signs of wear (e.g., heavy scratches, dull spots, wear and tear in the battery compartment).
How do we test the lightning?
How do we test the lightning?
We are testing these functions:
✅ Flash trigger
✅ Battery compartment (visual inspection for corrosion)
Please note: We do not conduct long-term tests or compatibility checks with specific camera models. Minor optical defects do not necessarily affect functionality.
